Andrea Schumacher Interiors Featured in ASPIRE Design and Home: Sophistication Meets Whimsy in Santa Barbara

April 2026

Andrea Schumacher Interiors is honored to be featured in ASPIRE Design and Home for a bold Santa Barbara residence that balances sophisticated design with playful whimsy and deeply personal storytelling.

Designed for a young creative homeowner, the project reflects a layered approach to California luxury living, where expressive materials, collected furnishings, and unexpected moments come together to create a home that feels imaginative, elevated, and entirely individual. The residence was designed in collaboration with Becker Henson Niksto, whose architectural vision introduced subtle references to the client’s childhood memories and fascination with adventure.

The story behind the project began unexpectedly when Andrea Schumacher met homeowner Ryan Mori on a flight. After learning she was an interior designer, Mori shared his vision for a new Santa Barbara home inspired in part by the elaborate “Pirates of the Caribbean” themed Halloween displays his family created throughout his childhood. That conversation ultimately evolved into a fully realized residence where sophistication and whimsy exist in careful balance.

Rather than leaning literal, the design incorporates understated moments of fantasy and imagination through architecture, materiality, and atmosphere. A glass “plank” walkway spans above water features near the entry sequence, while layered textures, sculptural forms, and moody lighting create a sense of discovery throughout the interiors.

Throughout the home, Andrea Schumacher Interiors juxtaposed refined contemporary detailing with richly expressive elements. Collected vintage furnishings, dramatic stone surfaces, custom millwork, and layered textiles bring warmth and personality to the modern architecture. The interiors feel curated over time rather than formally decorated, creating spaces that are both visually impactful and deeply livable.

The kitchen serves as one of the home’s defining moments, balancing restraint with drama through the use of Azul Macaubas quartzite, dark cabinetry, and sculptural detailing. While the homeowner initially envisioned illuminated amethyst stone throughout the entire kitchen, Andrea Schumacher redirected the concept into a more focused design gesture within the butler’s pantry, where backlit amethyst creates a striking focal point without overwhelming the space.

Because the residence was designed to support multiple forms of living and entertaining, several rooms serve layered functions. A lower-level lounge operates simultaneously as a home theater, recording studio, and entertaining space, while quieter private rooms introduce softer palettes and more intimate textures without losing the home’s overall sense of personality and visual richness.

What ultimately defines the project is its balance between youthful energy and timeless sophistication. The home embraces individuality without sacrificing refinement, resulting in a highly personalized Santa Barbara residence that feels both adventurous and enduring.
